Malaria diagnosis: Addressing the issue of HRP2 gene deletions

Access to an accurate and timely diagnosis is critical to preventing a malaria infection from progressing to severe illness and death. WHO recommends prompt malaria diagnosis either through microscopy or rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for all patients with suspected malaria. The hundreds of millions of RDTs sold each year are designed to detect a specific protein in a person’s blood. Parasites that have mutated to no longer express that protein can evade detection by RDTs. Such mutated parasites have now been reported in more than 35 countries – mainly in Africa and South America – and they are complicating malaria diagnosis and treatment. This video describes the problem of Histidine Rich Protein 2 (HRP2) gene deletions and what can be done to address it. More information: https://www.who.int/teams/global-mala...

Why you can’’t compare Covid-19 vaccines

In the US, the first two available Covid-19 vaccines were the ones from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna. Both vaccines have very high "efficacy rates," of around 95%. But the third vaccine introduced in the US, from Johnson & Johnson, has a considerably lower efficacy rate: just 66%. Look at those numbers next to each other, and it’’s natural to conclude that one of them is considerably worse. Why settle for 66% when you can have 95%? But that isn’’t the right way to understand a vaccine’’s efficacy rate, or even to understand what a vaccine does. And public health experts say that if you really want to know which vaccine is the best one, efficacy isn’’t actually the most important number at all.

Stopping the spread of Covid-19 variants

When a virus is widely circulating in a population and causing many infections, the likelihood of the virus mutating increases. The more opportunities a virus has to spread, the more it replicates – and the more opportunities it has to undergo changes.

Latest research: How to prevent coronavirus infections | COVID-19 Special

How do we get infected with the coronavirus? Japanese researchers have used a supercomputer to simulate how viral particles move. The simulation makes the invisible threat visible and could help people evaluate risk of infection. Their findings show how far even the smallest droplets can spread and demonstrate how masks, social distancing and humidity impact the spread of COVID-19. Their research suggests that the use of humidifiers may help limit infections indoors during times when regular ventilation isn’’t possible.

COVID Diagnosis with PCR | Misinterpreting results | Cycle threshold explained

#PCR testing to diagnose #COVID may be resulting in wrong diagnoses, unnecessary scares about #reinfection, and wasted resources. This video explains why RT-PCR tests, which are the gold standard for diagnostic testing, may be hindering our fight against COVID-19; how, after seven months, we still aren’t doing testing right; and what experts believe needs to change. Most importantly, we explore the role of the cycle threshold in all of this. Check out what a "Ct" is and why experts are calling for greater reporting of the Ct in results and changes to its threshold in laboratory protocols. How America Helped Stop Covid-19. Just Not in the U.S. | NYT Opinion

We’ve all heard how U.S. leadership failed its citizens with its pandemic response. We had the playbooks, we had the money, we had the experts. We just … didn’t use them. But it turns out, other countries did. Because U.S. public health leaders and scientists have been planning for a catastrophe just like Covid-19 for decades, and, in typical American fashion, we didn’t just write the pandemic playbook — we exported it around the world. In this video, we went searching for evidence that the public health innovations and scientific progress this country is famous for are still alive and well. Our journey to find lifesaving American initiatives introduced us to some interesting people: from a virus hunter in the bat caves in Thailand to a group of South Korean epidemiologists who just might have predicted this pandemic. What we found doesn’t change the fact that more than 220,000 Americans have died from Covid-19, but it sheds light on a part of the U.S. pandemic response that hasn’t gotten a lot of attention: that America’s decades of pandemic planning actually did save lives. Just not at home.
